Casa de Rodeos

House of the Circuits, circa 1726

The Casa de Rodeos takes its name from the Jewish Sephardic tradition of walking in procession seven times around the body of deceased adult male, prior to the interment. These circuits are called rodeamentos in Portuguese, in Hebrew hakkafot.

Above the entrance to the Casa de Rodeos is a citation taken from the Hebrew writings known as the Mishnah: They that are born are destined to die and the dead to be brought to life again (Ethics of the Fathers, Pirke Avot, 4:29).
